Road accidents are the major killer of young people between the ages of 5 and 34 and the cause of one third of deaths amongst young men aged between 15 and 24. Young and new drivers are involved in 20% of road accidents in which someone is injured.
THE DIFFERENCE 5MPH CAN MAKE
Its not just speeding at 100mph that kills people, just 5mph too fast in the wrong situation is a more common killer, particularly if a pedestrian is involved in the accident. This figure shows what happens when a pedestrian walks out in front of a car that is travelling at 30mph.
30mph 19mph 0 mph
0 metres 8 metres 14 metres
0 metres 8 metres 14 metres
35mph 26mph 18mph
Depending on the impact, the pedestrian will be thrown onto the bonnet or windscreen of the car and either killed or seriously injured.

REDUCING THE RISK IS JUST A MATTER OF EASING OFF THE POWER, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS LIKELY THAT THERE WILL BE PEDESTRIANS AROUND.
