Why do we need it the hazard perception test?
Each year 3,600 people are killed on Britain's roads. Improved hazard perception skills are expected to play an important part in achieving the Government's challenging casualty reduction targets.
Young drivers (17-21) make up only 7% of all licence holders yet they are involved in up to one in seven accidents involving injury. The accident liability of new drivers drops sharply over the first 12 months or so after passing the test and continues to fall as more experience is gained.
Young drivers have quicker reactions than older drivers. However, the more experienced driver scans the road better and recognises the clues that show a hazardous situation is developing much earlier and therefore starts to take action before the danger occurs. This is one of the reasons why accident involvement generally reduces as experience is gained.
New drivers take much longer (up to two seconds longer) to recognise hazardous situations than more experienced drivers.
What could happen in the test?
Look for events occurring in front of the car such as:-
School crossing and bus waiting with children crossing road
Breakdown vehicle on bend
Vans parked with hazard warning lights on
Cyclist on country road
Vehicle doing U turn on brow of hill
Furniture vans parked on bend (door open) with oncoming traffic
Green traffic light turns on approach
The theory test now consists of two parts, the muliple choice questions and the hazard perception test. You must pass both parts to pass your theory test.

Multiple choice
The multiple choice section consists of 50 questions which you will be required to answer in 57 minutes. This part of the test requires you answer the questions by touching the correct box on the actual computer screen. The system is very easy to use and before you actually start the test you have the option of a 15 minute practice session before the real test begins.
Throughout the test you have the option to flag any questions that you would like to come back to a bit later. So when you've reached question 50 you can go back to any that you've flagged. Also make sure you use all the time available to go over all the questions again just in case you've made any obvious mistakes. The PASS MARK for this section is 43 OUT OF 50.
When you have finished the multiple choice section you can have a 3 minute break before the Hazard Perception section starts.

Hazard perception

Before the real Hazard perception test begins you have a tutorial which shows what you need to do for the test, and after if required you can repeat this tutorial one more time only.

The Hazard perception test consists of 14 movie clips which are approximately 1 minute long. One of the clips has 2 hazards you are required to spot. So for this section you are required to spot 15 hazards in 14 movie clips. The test requires you to spot the hazards in the clips by clicking on the mouse button as soon as you see the hazard develop. The earlier you spot the hazard the higher your score will be. If you click the mouse as soon as you see the hazard developing you will get the maximum of 5 points for that hazard. A Hazard is anything that could cause you, the driver to change speed or direction. The Pass Mark for this section is 44 out of 75.

You must pass the MULTIPLE CHOICE and the HAZARD PERCEPTION sections to pass your theory test!!

To cancel your theory test you must give 3 clear working days notice or you'll lose your fee.
The U.K. Driving test is all about making sure that people who pass are competent and safe in the basic skills of driving.

When you're in the test centre waiting room and your examiner greets you, he will need to see your relevant documents and will ask you to sign an insurance declaration to say that the car is insured for test use and a residence declaration to say you live at that address (if you decline to sign, your test will be terminated). When the examiner has checked your documents he will ask you to take him to your car (take your documents with you). Usually before you get to your car the examiner will ask you to read a number plate from a randomly chosen vehicle at a distance of 20.5 metres (if you're unable to read the plate correctly, your test will be terminated). When you get to your car the examiner will ask you 2 of the show me tell me questions. If you incorrectly answer 1 or both of the questions you will get 1 minor fault (this will not result in failure). Next your examiner will ask you to get in the car and make yourself comfortable, he will walk round the car and join you in the passenger seat. He will then tell you "Throughout the test I'd like you to follow the road ahead at all times, unless road markings or road signs tell you otherwise. If I do want you turn, I will tell you in good time". The examiner will use the same terminology as your instructor, giving you plenty of notice. If at anytime you forget or don't understand any of the directions given by the examiner ASK!!!!

During your test you will be expected to drive for about 35-40 minutes in various road situations, some of them will be at higher speeds possibly up to 70 Mph. You will also be asked to perform 2 of the reversing manoeuvres and you may also be asked to perform the Emergency Stop exercise. If you have received the proper tuition you will adequately prepared to do what is asked.

To pass the U.K. Driving Test you must drive without:
Getting one serious or dangerous fault (Major).
Getting no more than 15 driving faults (Minor).
